Rhythm Will Always Find Its Way
Stop chasing permanence and start trusting the moments that return.

As she closed her eyes, a vibration started to spread from her feet, making its way to every cell in her body. A burning sensation made her unable to keep her hands steady; her shoulders loosened, arms flowed gently as if they were waves rocking from side to side, one minute slowly and calm, the next energetic and free. Energy rose, the beat felt closer, and she couldn’t help but jump up and down around occasionally.
Her body was ahead of her mind; every muscle followed the instructions whispered by the melody, even she did not know what movement her body was going to perform next. Her heartbeat aligned with the beat, and she opened her eyes.
She wasn’t dancing to the music; she was unified.
“I’m going to get another drink.” Said her friend Ally.
Sam slightly nodded, closing her eyes one more time, surrendering to the music.
Suddenly her shoulders felt tense, and she felt an instant pull to look backwards.
She stood still for a second, then leaned towards her bag to see if she had any cigarettes left. She took a deep sigh and looked around once again. When her breath was back at its normal pace, she grabbed the empty cigarette pack to throw it into the garbage bin. Her gaze looked empty as a reflection of her blank mind, and she found herself walking towards the smoking area.
Fresh air welcomed her with a gentle breeze. Feeling a bit cold but also content, she looked around. She was about to head back inside since no one was there to ask for a cigarette.
“I’m assuming you are looking for a cigarette?”
She flinched instantly when she heard the voice that felt as if it came out of a void. A minute ago, she was the only one there. Her stomach felt fizzy as she turned around.
A guy stood in front of her with a subtle smile on his face.
When her eyes met with his navy-blue gaze, she forced herself to take a deep breath.
“Who taught you to read minds?” said Sam, as he leaned forward and grabbed the cigarette off his hand.
“I’m William,” he said, simultaneously handing her a lighter.
“Sam.”
“Samantha?”
“No, just Sam.”
“Who are you here with, Sam?”
“My friend is at the bar, getting a drink. You? With friends or by yourself?”
“By myself.”
A sudden attraction spread itself that brought warmth around Sam’s chest, placing a smile on her face.
“Want to sit down?” William asked.
“Oh yes, I’ve been dancing my feet off; you can’t believe how much I needed that.”
He gave her a mischievous glance, and Sam’s heart skipped a beat with that teasing gaze.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Sam asked as her eyes grew larger with every spark of curiosity she had.
“I can actually.”
“What do you mean?” asked Sam, her eyebrows frowned.
“I watched you a bit as you danced. I like watching people dance, but only if their heart beats with every move that they make. You dance with your soul, and I couldn’t help myself.”
Sam took a breath through her mouth, inhaling as deeply as she could.
“Do you ‘dance with your soul too’?”
“I can give you a test run if you like?”
Her heart doubled its pacing as William looked her right in the eye with his navy-blue eyes. Forcing herself to not pull her gaze away as she deeply inhaled her cigarette.
They sat in silence as they smoked their cigarettes. William stood up as he finished his cigarette, and he crushed it under his shoe. He looked around and lingered, while Sam remained silent; that rarely felt peaceful for her.
For some reason, his presence felt comforting, and being still did not disturbed. She put out her cigarette as she finished, and they made their way towards the dance floor.
Both had their own rhythm. William’s moves were faster; Sam’s moves were gentler. Their bodies flowed through each other. When William bent, Sam found herself leaning. Sam turned around, and William caught her when her face returned. They did not speak, but the energy was visible. Their bodies gave their souls a voice, speaking a dialect that only they could understand. They didn’t speak, but something passed between them.
All of a sudden, the music ended and a complete silence filled the room. They both looked puzzled.
Sam anxiously looked around, looking for Ally, whom she saw at least more than an hour ago.
“I have to go!” she said to William, her gaze still searching for Ally among the crowd.
When she turned her face back to him, she was captivated by his navy-blue eyes.
“Can I at least get your number?” said William.
Their gaze locked into each other while minutes passed. Then suddenly she felt a grasp on her shoulder.
“Dude, I’ve been looking all over for you. Where did you disappear to?” said Ally, pulling Sam toward her side.
“I…I… was with…”
“Hi, I’m William,” said William.
Sam's eyes softened, steady and unguarded; she was sincerely offering her gratitude through her gaze for saving her from being awkward.
“Hey!” said Ally, as her eyes grew larger with every nuance of curiosity.
Then she turned her face back towards Sam and said,
“We have to go; my mother’s been harassing me.”
A quiet disappointment rose inside Sam. She wasn’t ready for this moment to end.
Her eyes met with his navy blue gaze again, and she opened her mouth but the music returned before she could speak, swallowing her words in its rhythm.
Ally dragged her towards the exit before she could say anything. While they were leaving, the song changed, but the feeling didn’t.
She smiled, the melody still pulsing through her chest. Maybe the night had ended, but she felt like something else was about to begin.
Acceptance only arrives when we acknowledge the beauty of the moment itself.
I’ve never been someone who lets moments like this fade; I always wanted more, for them to remain. In time, I realised that the more I chased, I often ended up with less.
Some people aren’t meant to be sought but to be brought by the tides when your frequency channels the same wavelength.
I learnt to stop chasing permanence and start trusting the moments that return. I now know that what’s meant to stay will find its way, carried by the same tide that once drifted my way.
The process taught me trust; the flow taught me faith and somewhere between them, I found grace
